Roxy and Kai have a big pink box in their room. It’s the “Costume Box” and is so jam packed full of costumes and dress up stuff that it won’t close anymore. There’s at least 3 or 4 princess costumes, a firefighter, policeman, doctor, a girl pirate and a boy pirate, cowboy, Superman, SuperGirl, Batman, Batgirl and a Wonder Woman costume. I’m pretty sure there’s a monkey costume in there somewhere, too and a couple of really ridiculous pink and purple wigs, hats, sunglasses, feather boas, plastic high heels and big chunky jewelry. Let’s just say they had PLENTY of options for Halloween this year. So what did they want to be? A black cat and a mummy. Great. Probably the ONLY two things not already in the box. And, of course, they decided to be a black cat and mummy AFTER all the stores had sold 99% of their costumes.

So, we DIY’d it :)

I made Roxy’s cat ears out of a headband and blue duct tape (classy, huh?!) and Henry drew her whiskers and nose on with a ball point pen. She has a tail (and it’s actually really cute) but of course you can’t see it in the picture. The black and blue tutu was made by my sister Jessie, even though I told Roxy black cats don’t usually have big poofy blue bellies. She said “Well then, I’m not a black cat. I’m a black and blue cat.” :) As thrown-together as it was, she actually pulled it off and looked pretty darn cute. And she had a great time. And, of course, that’s all that matters, anyway :)

Kai’s costume is made out of about $20 worth of gauze wrap and a $3 piece of Halloween decor ripped up fabric (the kind you’re supposed to hang outside!) We pretty much just wrapped and wrapped and wrapped until he was the WORLD’S MOST ADORABLE MUMMY EVER! Seriously, he could not have looked cuter. And he did the best little “Mummy Face.” Ahhhh, I love my boy. He had a great time, too.

So, here they are, my goofy little trick or treaters. Oh, how I love my Rox and Kai :)

With all the talk about health care reform here in the US, we tend to forget how much worst it actually is in the third world. Still it's hard for me to comprehend why the US has chosen not to embrace socialized health care in this "great" nation. I believe this country should not only take action to save it's people, but should also be held accountable for health care in countries that it has destroyed...

Kai turns three years old on the 26th of April, but we had his birthday party early to
accommodate schedules. He wanted a "Monster Party"! We loved the idea but didn't want standard "commercial" monster decorations, you know something cute and personal. So I had the idea of dressing up plain brown paper bags as monsters. For about $30 bucks you can buy all kinds of decorative stuff like googly eyes, feathers, fake fur, colored felt, pattern paper, etc. This project was really fun!!! I think we are going to make more! Here are a few we made.

If you think about it you can have a blast at a small cost. No matter what you are into you can challenge yourself by recreating you favorite movie characters or musicians or even family members...just have fun!

Friendship is a money thing?

Friendship can always be put to the test and at times destroyed, when a certain amount of understanding is not achieved between the peeps involved.

I used to do a lot of commercial art. Club flyers, brochures, business cards, etc. I still do on occasion but not as much. Working full time in that field was stressful. Everyone was competing with lower pricing, flashy graphics, more gloss, blah, blah, blah...I created art for money just like the next guy but I didn't want to be an industry hustler. I prefer working with a smaller client base with more focus on the client. Now I pretty much pick and choose which jobs I will work on and let the money sharks fight over printing prices and crank out the same old shit.

I have been in the "art business" almost 20 years now and I can truly say I love where I'm at now. I still create some commercial art from time to time but focus more on painting and diversifying my media. In the scene I'm part of now, people are more passionate than competitive. The artists I hang with are supportive of each other, each learning from one another and growing, not only as artists but as humans with an understanding of others and a self confidence that allows egos to be put aside.

An issue has come up recently which lead me to write this post.

Last weekend I painted live at Artslam and I invited some people to come and hangout. One of those people was an old high school buddy, who has been a good friend through the years. On that evening my old friend was, at first a little annoying but as the night went on he became abrasively annoying and obnoxious! Telling some of the artists he could "hook them up with rich clients" and "that he could get them out of the trenches". What he was rambling about was all about money and it was bad timing on his part. He pissed off some friends of mine by badgering them with his unwanted business proposals and degrading some ones artwork with his belligerent rambling. At the end of the night many people were glad to see him go.

I spoke to him afterwards and tried to explain, that the scene I'm in is not a money grubbing snob-fest, but a social gathering with benefits. I told him that he should have approached my friends with more tact and subtlety. He dismissed my view of the situation and gave a half-ass apology, then called me a looney for disagreeing with him! He said "fuck them if they don't understand". No, good sir, fuck you and adios motor mouth!

I guess what I'm trying say is, everyone needs money but it doesn't have to run your life.

This is the first, in my "what you see...what you get" series of posts.
Exposing industry bullshit! Looking at the website you get the impression that this place is "top-notch" and upon meeting a rep and getting a price quote you would hope so too.

Well not so much...The Retreat at Barton Creek.

There is dog shit every where, because people don't pick-up after their pets. The sprinklers gush water like a natural spring and the potable water has an oder. The maintenance crew takes weeks to fix any problems, if you can call it fixing when a "dude" shows up with a screwdriver and not much else. Now, I really don't give a fuck what happend to cause this mess but I think you should get what you pay for immediately, not 12 months down the road. I say it's false advertising!
